Dissertation/Thesis Abstract. Amongst consensual non-monogamies, the swing lifestyle has persisted in Western culture for over 80 years despite opposition and friction with monogamous cultural norms. Quantitative studies of swingers report mostly positive outcomes on measures of satisfaction, self-determination and happiness that suggest an overall self-esteem effect along with an implied collective self-esteem effect found in membership within the lifestyle. In a cross- sectional study (N = 154) Swingers showed slightly higher scores on the Adult Self- Perception Profile Global Self-esteem measure and significantly higher scores on the Sexual Relationship Scale Communal Orientation than did monogamous persons. Factors contributory to this finding were demographic constants in education and income, important life domain interests in sociability and intimate relationships and a communal philosophy towards sexual relationships.
